SDL Trados Studio - Understanding reports

Understanding reports

Understanding report is important for a correct relationship between translators, translation agencies and end customers.

Here is a sample text.

The cat is on the table.
The cat is under the table.
The cat is on the table.

Let’s analyse this file using an empty memory.
Go to the Files view (target language flag).
Select the file with a single click, then right-click and select Analyze Files, then click Finish.
Go to the Reports view.
Here is the result.

We’ve got 18 words.
Sentence 3 is the same as sentence 1 (The cat is on the table.), so 12 words out of 18 are NEW, while 6 words are REPETITIONS.
Read at the bottom of this page about the difference between REPETITIONS and CROSS-FILE REPETITIONS

Repeat the analysis changing one setting.
Select again the file in the Files view, right-click and select Analyze files, then press Next and select Analyze Files (under Batch Processing).
Select Report internal fuzzy match leverage (not selected by default).

Click Finish.

Return to the Reports view and select the top report

Here are the new results.

You get 6 New words and 6 Fuzzy match words.

That is because sentence 2 (The cat is under the table.)  is similar to sentence 1 (The cat is on the table.), so during translation, after having translated segment 1, segment 2 will be provided for translation as fuzzy match sentence.

If you return to the editor, translate the first segment and add it to the translation memory with CONTROL+ENTER and repeat the analysis, here are the new results.

6 words are CONTEXT MATCH (the first sentence)
It means that the sentence in the file can be found in the TM
and
the sentence is in the same context within the file as in a previously translated file.

6 words are 100% (the third sentence)
It means that the sentence in the file can be found in the TM
and
the sentence is in a different context within the file compared with a previously translated file.

6 words are fuzzy matches (the second sentence)
It means that the sentence is similar (in this case with a percentage of 85%-94% to another sentence already translated which can be found in the TM.

Please, note that if the option Report internal fuzzy match leverage is active, there are 2 sets of fuzzy matches.
The first one are actual fuzzy matches (the TM is able to provide them right now).
Then second ones are future fuzzy matches (the TM will be able to provide them when translation is in progress).

CROSS-FILE REPETITIONS

If the same sentence is included twice in the same file, that is a REPETITION
If the same sentence is included once in two files, this is a CROSS-FILE REPETITION
If you analyze two files including the same sentence of 6 words with an empty memory, you get this report

cross file repetitions

NUMBERS

If a segment contains only a number, it is considered as 100% if analysed with a blank memory.

LOCKED SEGMENTS

In Trados 2014 if you analyse a file containing locked segments, you can select the option
Report locked segments as a separate category.
